 Board of Directors

The 2011-2012 SG&CC Board of Directors

Bill Engle - President
Elected to BoD: 2009, Term ends: 2012

I am 60 years old. I graduated from Evergreen High School in Seattle in 1967. I graduated from the University of Washington in 1972 with a BA in Business Administration, concentrating on a degree in Finance. I am married and have 5 lovely children and have 11 even more wonderful grandchildren. We purchased a townhouse in North Sunland in December of 2007 and finally moved into it in September of 2008.

I have been in the electrical construction business since 1967. I have worked for electrical wholesalers, electrical contractors, and finally owned a light fixture manufacturer factory for the last 13 years. There I was the problem solver, and bookkeeper doing all the books and payroll. We started with just 2 employees and when I left we were up to 6 employees with sales over $10 million a year. When I purchased the Agency the sales were under $2 million a year.

I was involved in 2 condo associations in Anchorage for the past 5 years. I was the President of my residential association and Vice President of my business condo association.

Pete Wilson - 1st Vice President & Green Committee
Elected to BoD: 2009, Term ends: 2012

Prior to moving to Sunland two years ago, my wife, Christie and I resided for 16 years in Edmonds, WA. Originally from the east coast, I was born and spent my youth in eastern Pennsylvania. It was during these informative years that my father introduced me to golf and “allowed” me to caddy for him during his regular Saturday foursome. Since he is no longer with us, and cannot deny it, it was during these Saturday matches that I heard my father for the first and only time use any off color language of any kind. Golf can do that to a person. Little did I know from this enlightened beginning I would be involved in the golfing industry for the rest of my life.

After graduating from Penn State University having earned a B.S. degree in Biology as well as a Associate degree in Turfgrass Management I moved to the Chicago area to begin my new career as an assistant golf course superintendent and eventually to meet and marry my wife. I worked in the Chicago area for 12 years where I served as golf course superintendent at two different country clubs. At some point my wanderlust re-emerged and I began looking into living in the Northwest. After securing a position in Seattle, Chris and I moved here with our son, James, in 1991. I was extremely fortunate to serve as the superintendent at Seattle Golf Club for the next sixteen years until my retirement two years ago.

In addition to golf I am an avid sailor. Soon after arriving in Seattle, we purchased a sailboat and my family and I had many fun days investigating the endless inlets and harbors of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. However, my wife claims sailing is the only thing that can scare you out of your wits while only going 5 miles per hour! We have since sold our boat and bought an RV. Other interests include RVing, camping, woodworking, and computers.

Jim Tallman -  2nd Vice President & Facilities
Elected to BoD: 2010, Term ends: 2013

I have lived in the Sequim are since 1961 and in SunLand since 1984. My wife Willadee and I joined SunLand in 1992. We left the area for a few years and came back home to SunLand in 2005.

I worked for the Public Utility District for 30 years and during that time I was a charter member and President of the Sequim Jaycees; served as Chairman of Parks and Recreation District #1; Past President of Sequim Valley Lions Club; Charter Commodore of Sequim Bay Yacht Club; and presently I am serving on the Green Committee.

When we lived in SunLand from 1992 to 2005 during that time, I served on the SunLand Golf and Country Club Board of Directors. I would proudly serve again on our board, my wife and I love our club and I want to work hard to keep our club a viable entity.

Bob Greer - Treasurer
Elected to BoD: 2011, Term ends: 2014

After 39 years with Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), I retired from our NYC US headquarters in February 2005 and headed out to Sequim with my youngest son to build a much anticipated retirement home on Owls Nest Road on Bell Hill. Construction was completed in June 2007 and we moved in shortly thereafter.

I am originally from Southwestern Ontario, Canada where I joined CIBC in 1966. I spent several years in various management positions in Canada until I was transferred to our Seattle Branch office in 1977. I spent 7 years here in the Pacific Northwest and it was during that period I fell in love with the Northwest in general and the Olympic Peninsula in particular. I was subsequently transferred to our Los Angeles office for six years and then to our NYC US headquarters where I spent my final15 years as a senior officer in our Corporate Restructuring and Recovery Group. I very much enjoyed working in NYC and living in Connecticut but as a place to retire to, no place, in my view beats Sequim.

In addition to my aforementioned son (who is now in college) I have 2 other sons and 2 daughters, all of whom are married and have amongst them provided me with 2 granddaughters and 2 grandsons.

I joined SunLand Golf and Country Club shortly after ariving in Sequim and have enjoyed playing golf, meeting many of its members and establishing many friendships during that time. I am pleased to serve on the Board of Directors and hope to be a constructive contributor during my tenure thereon.

I moved to SunLand with my wife Lani in July, 2007, after 26 years working as an Air Traffic Controller in Minnesota. My parents have lived in SunLand since 1975 and we were frequent visitors over the years.

Lani and I both try to play golf and have enjoyed meeting all the wonderful members of the Sunland Golf Club. We hope to be here for many years and look forward to all the fun yet to come.

Marsha Carr - Membership Committee
Appointed to BoD: 2010, Term ends: 2013

Layton and I moved from Southern California 14 years ago….joined SGCC and proceeded to “learn” to play golf where 14 years later we’re still learning. Some of the activities I have undertaken in our “blue hole” home are as follows: interviewer of new residents in SLOA, Chair of the Gathering Place, Treasurer of SWGA, member of the Membership Committee as well as multiple projects supporting the Club. Off the “reservation”, I have been a volunteer with the Sequim Museum and Arts Center as well as the League of Women Voters. Clallam County.  I enjoy being part of our local hula troupe which is one way I keep connected with my birthplace of Hawaii.

Jay Tomlin - Golf Committee
Elected to BoD: 2010, Term ends: 2013

I was born and raised in Everett, Washington. I attended the University of Washington and received degrees in Chemical Engineering and Business Administration. After working a couple of years in the Bellevue area, I moved to California and took a job with the Department of Defense/Navy at Mare Island Navel Shipyard in Vallejo, California. I was a project manager for the overhaul and refueling of nuclear reactor plants in submarines. I left Mare Island Naval Shipyard after 17 years and took a job with the Department of Energy in Oakland, California. I continued my work as a project manager but now it involved environmental cleanup at several national laboratories. I retired in August 2008 after 31 years of federal government service.

My wife Rosie and I have been married since 1991. Rosie and I first became interested in the Sequim area in 2002 so we came to visit that summer. We liked the community of SunLand better than the other neighborhoods we visited. I was able to play a round of golf at Sunland and was impressed with the good conditioning and challenging golf course. I returned in the fall to purchase a fairway lot. Following my retirement, we moved to Sunland and rented until our home on 14th Court was completed. We moved into our home on November 16, 2009.

I have played golf since my late teens on public golf courses until I joined Sunland Golf & Country Club in April 2009. I have 10 years (1984 to 1994) Board of Directors experience when I belonged to the Mare Island Channel Club. I held several positions including President, Secretary/Treasurer, Tournament Committee, Handicap Committee, and Greens Committee.

I try to keep physically active so I jog the neighborhood, workout at SARC and join my wife on her hikes occasionally. My wife and I enjoy traveling and would like to get back into biking and camping now that we have settled into our new home.

Marty O'Brien - Employee Benefits
Elected to BoD: 2010, Term ends: 2013

Mary and I purchased a lot in SunLand in 1997. Having previously visited many potential retirement areas, we were won over by the very mild climate, the intimate community and the friendly people here. We joined the SunLand Golf and Country in May, 1999 while still living in northeast Tacoma. After I retired in 2000, from the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle, we began building our home on Taylor Blvd. that same year. We moved into our new home at the end of September, 2001.

While employed at Metro, I returned to school and received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Washington, School of Architecture. I subsequently began a career in Facilities Maintenance as the section engineering coordinator. I worked my way through the supervisory levels and ultimately achieved the position of Power and Facilities Division Manager, with a staff of as many as 280 employees. The responsibilities included the management and care of all transit facilities; from the street side bus stops and signs, passenger shelters, Park & Ride lots and the transit base buildings, underground transit tunnel, trolley overhead and radio systems. I was instrumental in negotiating union contracts with the Local 587 Transit Workers Union and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 77.

Mary and I have been married for sixteen years and have a blended family of three daughters and a son, who have blessed us with six grandsons. No granddaughters as yet, but we haven’t given up hope.

I served three years on the SunLand Owners Association Board of Directors as the Architectural Committee Director, and I would very much like to offer my experience to the SunLand Golf and Country Club Board of Directors and would greatly appreciate your support.
