The Scholarship Committee

In 1990, the SLOA Board authorized the formation of a committee to award scholarships for higher education to selected members of each senior class of Sequim High School to be financed by donations from SLOA members. The first SunLand scholarships were presented in 1991 and have been awarded annually since. The committee was registered as a Washington State nonprofit corporation in 2000 and granted tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code in 2001.

The criteria employed in screening applications include academic excellence, participation in extracurricular school and community activities, employment providing savings for education, and relative need for financial assistance. Students who emerge as prime candidates after the initial screen are interviewed before the final selections are made. The number and amount of scholarships is determined by the funds available. In 2005, $12,000 was divided among four students. Our scholarships are for one year, renewable for one year and paid to the appropriate Registrar’s office to be applied to tuition.

The generous support of this program by SLOA members has resulted in our contribution to the Sequim scholarship pool being exceeded only by endowed foundations.
